Lenovo ThinkStation P620 — Refurbished Threadripper PRO Workstations
The P620 was the first mainstream workstation built around AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO, and it remains the cheapest legitimate route to 12, 16, 32 or 64 workstation-class cores in a single socket. One CPU, eight memory channels, six PCIe 4.0 slots and 10-gigabit Ethernet on the board — a specification that took two Intel sockets to match at the time. Buying one used skips the part of the depreciation curve that hurts most. Every P620 we ship is configured, stress-tested and covered by a free 1-year warranty on parts, labor and shipping.

Why buy a used P620 instead of a new desktop
- Eight memory channels. Consumer Ryzen and Core platforms give you two. On mesh generation, point-cloud processing and large simulation runs, bandwidth — not clock speed — is what you run out of first.
- Six PCIe 4.0 slots. Four of them are full-length x16 rated at 75 W, so multiple GPUs, a capture card and an NVMe adapter can coexist without a lane-budget argument.
- ECC as standard. Registered ECC DDR4 to 512 GB, which no Threadripper non-PRO or desktop board offers.
- 10GbE on the motherboard. No add-in card, no slot consumed — useful if you are pulling video or datasets off a NAS.
What we currently hold
Our in-stock P620s are concentrated on the 12-core 3945WX with 128 GB of DDR4 and a GeForce RTX 3080 — a configuration aimed at Adobe, DaVinci and 3D content work, where high per-core clocks matter as much as thread count. Higher core counts (3955WX, 3975WX, 3995WX) and professional Quadro or RTX A-series graphics are available to order rather than off the shelf, as are larger memory kits. One planning note: because the platform has no integrated graphics, a P620 always needs a discrete card — budget for one if you are buying a bare chassis. For anything beyond the listed builds, request a quote and we will source and build it.
P620 or a Xeon ThinkStation?
- ThinkStation P520 — single Xeon W, four memory channels, PCIe 3.0. Much cheaper, and the sensible pick for CAD seats that do not saturate many cores.
- P720 and P920 — dual-socket Xeon Scalable. More total memory slots, but two CPUs, two heatsinks and NUMA behaviour to think about; the P620 delivers comparable thread counts from one socket.

Which Threadripper PRO chips does the P620 take?
Lenovo qualified the 3945WX (12 cores), 3955WX (16), 3975WX (32) and 3995WX (64). All four are 280 W parts in the same socket, so the difference in the field is thermal and acoustic, not mechanical. Lower core counts clock higher, which is why the 12-core is often the better buy for Adobe and CAD work.
How much memory can it hold, and does it need ECC?
Eight registered ECC DDR4-3200 modules, 64 GB each, for 512 GB total. The platform is designed around registered ECC memory — this is not a board where you drop in desktop sticks. Populate all eight channels if you care about bandwidth; a half-populated board leaves real performance behind.
Does the P620 have onboard graphics?
No. Threadripper PRO has no integrated GPU, so the machine will not produce a display without a card installed. Every complete build we sell includes one; if you order a bare chassis, add a card at the same time.
Is a used Threadripper PRO workstation a risk?
Less than you would think. These are enterprise-class parts with ECC memory and a Platinum-rated power supply, and the components that age — fans, thermal interface, drives — are the ones we inspect and replace as needed. Every unit is tested under sustained load before shipping and comes with a free 1-year warranty covering parts, labor and shipping, extendable to five years, plus a 90-day return window.
Can I still get parts and support for it?
Yes. Memory, drives, graphics cards and power supplies for the platform are all readily available, and we hold spares for the machines we sell. Our support team is US-based and reachable by phone, email or chat during business hours.
