Dell Precision 7920 — Refurbished Dual-Socket Xeon Workstations

The Dell Precision 7920 is Dell’s flagship dual-socket workstation platform: one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the Intel C621 chipset, 24 DIMM slots and a 900 W graphics budget. Dell built it in two chassis on the same board-level specification — the Precision 7920 Tower (T7920) and the 2U Precision 7920 Rack (R7920). New, it was a five-figure machine. Second-hand it is the cheapest way to put 40-plus cores and half a terabyte of ECC memory under one desk — or in one rack. Read this before you order: the power question

The 7920’s 1400 W supply is specified for a 181–240 VAC input, and Dell recommends a 220 VAC feed for the full 900 W graphics configuration. In practice that means a standard North American 120 V wall outlet is not the right home for a fully loaded 7920 — you want the same kind of circuit a rack or a large printer sits on. It is the single most common surprise with this model, and it is far cheaper to plan for than to discover on install day. Precision 7920 Rack (R7920) — the 2U rack version

The Precision 7920 Rack is the same dual-Xeon workstation platform in a 2U rackmount chassis. Dell’s own description is “ultimate performance and security in a 2U form factor”: identical processor and memory support to the tower, the same 900 W graphics budget, but with datacenter plumbing around it — eight front-accessible drive bays, PERC RAID controllers, a quad-gigabit network daughter card with 10GbE options, iDRAC9 out-of-band management and redundant hot-pluggable power. It takes the same 2U of rack space as a Dell PowerEdge R740, which is why it usually ends up in the same cabinet.

Tower or rack: what actually changes

Identical on both: processor support (one or two Xeon Scalable, 1st or 2nd generation, up to 28 cores each), the C621 chipset, 24 DIMM slots and the 1.5 TB / 3 TB memory ceiling, the 900 W graphics budget, and the supported operating systems — Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu.

  • Drives. The tower uses FlexBays: four in front, eight with the rear bays fitted, ten with the 5.25″ bay and a MegaRAID 9460-16i. The rack has eight front-accessible 3.5″/2.5″ bays behind a lockable bezel and uses PERC H330/H730P/H740P controllers instead of MegaRAID.
  • Power. The tower runs one 1400 W supply. The rack takes one or two hot-pluggable 1100 W supplies, so it can be built with redundancy, and a 1600 W non-redundant option exists for the heaviest GPU builds.
  • Networking. The tower has two desktop-class Gigabit ports on the board. The rack ships with an Intel i350 quad-port gigabit daughter card and can be ordered with 10GbE copper or SFP+ on top.
  • Management. The rack has iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller and a dedicated management port — the same out-of-band management as a PowerEdge server. The tower relies on Intel vPro/AMT and DASH.
  • Graphics slots. Four x16 graphics slots on the tower against three on the rack, though the 900 W ceiling and the three-double-width-card limit are the same on both.
  • The desk. The tower has front USB Type-C, a universal audio jack and an internal speaker; the rack has server-style front I/O (two USB 2.0, a management USB and a VGA port for iDRAC9) and expects to be driven remotely.

When the rack version is the right answer

Choose the R7920 when the machine has to live in a cabinet rather than under a desk: secure 1:1 remote seats served over Teradici PCoIP to a zero client, GPU compute parked next to the storage it reads, workstation-class ISV certification in an estate that is already racked, or any site where hot-swap drives, redundant supplies and iDRAC9 remote hands matter more than desk-side I/O. If the user sits next to the machine and nobody needs to rack it, the tower is the cheaper and quieter choice — and for a single-socket seat, the Precision 5820 is cheaper still.

Configurations we actually build

Because the 7920 takes anything from a 6-core Xeon Bronze to a 22-core Gold or a Platinum part, the builds on this page cover a wide span. Typical stock runs Xeon Silver 4110/4114 and Gold 6100-series pairs with 64–256 GB of DDR4, and we regularly assemble memory-heavy machines at 384 GB, 512 GB and 768 GB for simulation and virtualization users. Graphics tend to be NVIDIA Quadro M2000 or P2000 on the workhorse builds, stepping up to P5000 and P6000 where rendering matters. Windows 10 or 11 Pro is standard; bare units are available for imaged fleets.

  • Single CPU or two? A second processor unlocks 12 more DIMM slots and two more x16 slots. If you will not use them, one high-clock CPU is usually the faster machine for interactive work.
  • Memory population. Six channels per socket — a 6-module kit per CPU beats an odd number of larger sticks for bandwidth.
  • Storage. The FlexBay layout is hot-swap-friendly, so mixed NVMe boot plus bulk SATA is easy to arrange.

Precision 7920 — Buyer Questions

What is the difference between the Precision 7920 Tower and the 7920 Rack?

The chassis and its plumbing, not the compute. Both take one or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors of up to 28 cores, both use the Intel C621 chipset, both have 24 DIMM slots with the same 1.5 TB memory ceiling, and both are rated for 900 W of graphics. The Rack (R7920) is a 2U rackmount body with eight front-accessible 3.5″/2.5″ drive bays, PERC RAID controllers, an Intel i350 quad-gigabit network daughter card with optional 10GbE, iDRAC9 out-of-band management and one or two hot-pluggable 1100 W supplies. The Tower (T7920) uses FlexBays for up to ten drives, a single 1400 W supply, desktop I/O including front USB Type-C and audio, and has one more x16 graphics slot.

Can a Precision 7920 Tower be mounted in a rack?

Not as a 2U machine. Dell offered an optional 19″ rackmount rail kit for the 7920 Tower, but the chassis is a 17.05″-tall tower, so racking one swallows a large slice of a cabinet and still leaves you with a single 1400 W supply and desktop-style I/O. If the machine has to live in a rack, the Precision 7920 Rack (R7920) is the version Dell designed for it — 2U, hot-swap bays, redundant power and iDRAC9.

How much memory does a Precision 7920 support?

Up to 1.5 TB of DDR4-2666 ECC in either chassis, across 24 slots — twelve per processor, six channels each. Dell lists 3 TB with select large-memory Xeon SKUs, or up to 768 GB if you want 2933 MHz modules. All twelve slots on the second bank only become available once the second processor is installed, so a single-CPU 7920 is a 12-slot machine.

Is the Precision 7920 a good machine for machine learning or rendering?

Yes, for workloads that fit PCIe Gen3 and Quadro/RTX-era cards. The 900 W graphics budget covers three 300 W double-width GPUs in a dual-CPU build, and up to 1.5 TB of ECC memory means large scenes and datasets stay in RAM rather than on disk — which is why 7920s remain popular for offline rendering, simulation and model training on a budget. Will it run on a normal 120 V outlet?

The tower’s 1400 W power supply is rated for a 181–240 VAC input, and Dell recommends 220 VAC for the full 900 W graphics configuration. Plan for a higher-voltage circuit, particularly on multi-GPU builds. The same applies to the rack version, where the heaviest GPU configurations call for two 1600 W supplies at 220 VAC. If your site cannot provide one, a single-socket Precision 5820 is the more practical choice.

How many graphics cards fit?

The tower takes up to four PCIe x16 Gen3 cards, with a 900 W graphics power budget — enough for three 300 W double-width boards in a dual-CPU build. Two of the four x16 slots only appear when the second processor is present, so a single-CPU 7920 is effectively a two-card machine. The rack version supports three x16 graphics cards, to the same 900 W ceiling.

7920 or 7820 — what is the difference?

Both are dual-socket Xeon Scalable towers. The 7920 is the larger chassis: 24 DIMM slots against 12, more drive bays, more PCIe slots and a much bigger power budget. The 7820 is lighter, cheaper and easier to power, and is usually the better value unless you specifically need the memory or GPU capacity.

What condition are these machines in?

They are ex-enterprise units, cleaned, rebuilt to the ordered specification, and burn-in tested before they ship. Cosmetic condition is described in each listing. Coverage is a free 1-year warranty on parts, labor and shipping, extendable to five years at checkout, with returns accepted for 90 days from purchase.

When was the Precision 7920 released?

Dell announced the Precision 7920 Tower on August 1, 2017, around SIGGRAPH, alongside the 5820 and 7820, and opened orders on October 3, 2017; the Precision 7920 Rack shipped on the same schedule. A long production run is the reason dual-socket 7920 configurations are readily available refurbished at a fraction of what they cost new.
