If you priced memory a year ago and are pricing it again today, nothing about this market will look familiar. A 32 GB DDR5-6000 kit that sold for roughly $80 in mid-2025 lists between $400 and $620 today. A 32 GB DDR4-3200 kit that was a $70 afterthought now costs $250. And the mainstream DDR4 chip that anchors both consumer and server pricing set an all-time record in early August 2026 — higher than at any point since tracking began in 2016.
The short answer, checked August 21, 2026: DDR4 is still cheaper per gigabyte than DDR5 — about $7.81/GB for a mainstream desktop kit versus $12.80–$19.40/GB for DDR5, and about $8.33/GB versus $36.34/GB on the server ECC side. But DDR4 is the faster riser now, and the reason is not demand from PC builders. It is that almost nobody wants to manufacture it any more.

What Changed Since 2025 — and What We Got Wrong
The earlier version of this article, written in October 2025, told PC builders that DDR5 had quietly become the better per-gigabyte buy and that DDR4 was the volatile one to avoid. Half of that aged well and half of it did not, so it is worth being explicit about which half.
What held up: DDR4 was indeed the volatile one. Its price kept climbing, its production kept shrinking, and buying DDR4 late has cost people money.
What did not: the conclusion that DDR5 was the cheaper gigabyte. That was true for a few months around the end of 2025, on desktop kits, when DDR4 spiked and DDR5 had not yet caught the AI wave. Then DDR5 caught it. Through 2026 DDR5 rose harder in absolute dollars than DDR4 did, and today a DDR4 kit is unambiguously the cheaper gigabyte on the desktop — roughly $7.81/GB against $12.81 and up. Anyone who read that October 2025 advice and bought a DDR5 platform for price reasons alone did not get the outcome the article implied.
The deeper lesson is that "which generation is cheaper per GB" is not a stable property of the technology. It is a snapshot of two supply curves crossing, and in a shortage they cross more than once. Here is what a mainstream 32 GB kit has actually cost over the last year:
Two things stand out. First, both generations tripled or better — this is not a DDR4 story or a DDR5 story, it is a DRAM story. Second, the ratio narrowed: in late 2025 a DDR5 kit cost about twice its DDR4 equivalent ($150 against $75); today the cheapest available DDR5 kit is about 1.6× the DDR4 one ($409.99 against $249.99), even though DDR5's absolute increase was larger. DDR4 is catching up from below, which is precisely what you would expect when a product is being discontinued rather than discounted.
Why RAM Prices Exploded — and Why DDR4 Is Now the Fast Riser
The cause is not a factory fire or a shipping crisis. It is a deliberate reallocation of the world's DRAM wafers toward the parts that make the most money, and those parts serve AI.
High-bandwidth memory eats wafers. HBM consumes roughly three times as many silicon wafers as conventional DRAM for the same output, and demand keeps compounding — UBS projects NVIDIA alone will consume around 25.1 billion Gb of HBM in 2027 out of an industry total near 61.5 billion. Every wafer that goes to HBM is a wafer that does not become a DDR4 or DDR5 module. The result showed up in contract prices with brutal speed: server DRAM contract prices rose roughly 90% in Q1 2026 alone, and TrendForce still forecasts a further 13–18% increase in Q3 2026, calling the market "extremely tight."
DDR4 got orphaned, not retired. This is the part that surprises people. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have all pushed their capacity toward DDR5, HBM and higher-layer NAND, leaving Nanya Technology and Winbond handling the majority of remaining DDR4 production — at volumes far below global demand. Meanwhile the demand did not go away: the installed base of AM4 desktops, LGA1700 systems, and every Xeon Scalable and EPYC Rome/Milan server on earth still runs DDR4, and enterprise SSD controllers consume DDR4 as cache. DigiTimes reports the resulting supply-demand gap for DDR4 8 Gb chips could last up to two years.
The forecasts for DDR4 specifically are worse than for DRAM as a whole. Morgan Stanley expects DDR4 to rise 50% in Q3 2026 and another 10%+ in Q4, describing mature memory as "the next squeeze" as makers starve legacy DRAM to feed HBM. That is roughly triple the increase forecast for the DRAM market overall.
Consumer supply consolidated to two vendors. In December 2025 Micron announced it was exiting the Crucial consumer business after 29 years, shipping its last consumer parts by the end of February 2026 and redirecting output to enterprise DRAM and SSDs for AI customers. The retail DRAM supply chain now leans on Samsung and SK Hynix plus module houses buying whatever chips they can secure. Fewer sellers, in a shortage, is not a recipe for price competition.
The oddest consequence: older is not cheaper. DDR3 4 Gb chips averaged $12.75 in July 2026 — $3.19 per gigabit — against DDR5 16 Gb chips at $47.07, or $2.94 per gigabit. A memory standard from 2007 now costs more per bit than the current one, because the lines that made it were dismantled to make DDR4. The pattern is consistent: in 2026 the memory decision drives the platform decision, not the other way around. That is a reversal of how hardware buying normally works, and it is worth saying out loud before you spec anything this year.

The reason this arbitrage exists is simple: DDR4 servers are being decommissioned by hyperscalers on schedule, so the secondary market has supply, while new DDR4 production has nearly stopped and new DDR5 is being rationed to AI buyers. If DDR5 costs 60–150% more per gigabyte, it is fair to ask what the premium delivers. The honest answer is: a lot on paper, a variable amount in practice, and almost nothing that rescues the price gap on a desktop.
The nuance that matters: bandwidth scales, latency does not. DDR5-6000 CL30 and DDR4-3200 CL16 land in roughly the same place for the time a single request takes; DDR5 wins on how many requests can be in flight at once. That is why the gap shows up in multi-threaded work, virtualization, compilation and local AI inference, and why it is much smaller in games, where a fast DDR4 platform still holds its own.
On the server side the calculus is different, and more favorable to DDR5: twelve memory channels on EPYC Genoa against eight on Milan is a real architectural jump for memory-bound workloads. But at $36/GB versus $5.84/GB, the workload has to be genuinely memory-bandwidth-bound before the arithmetic favors it. Every shortage produces the same instinct — wait it out — and this one punishes it. Here is what the people with visibility into supply are actually saying:
- Q3 2026 is still rising. TrendForce puts overall DRAM contract prices up 13–18% quarter over quarter, and describes the market as extremely tight even as consumer demand weakens.

- The one soft spot: consumer demand is weakening under these prices, which is why TrendForce expects the rate of increase to moderate. Moderating increases are still increases.
Put practically: if you need memory within the next twelve months, the cheapest day to buy it is the day you are sure you need it. If you are speculating on a price drop, you are betting against every published supply forecast and against the capital-expenditure timelines that produce new wafers.

How to Buy Memory Without Overpaying in 2026
A checklist that saves more money than any brand choice, in rough order of how much it is worth:
- Match the platform, not the marketing. Server boards want RDIMM or LRDIMM ECC at the speed the CPU generation supports — 2666 for Xeon Scalable 1st/2nd gen, 2933 for Cascade Lake, 3200 for Ice Lake and EPYC Rome/Milan. Faster modules run at the slower speed; they do not add performance, they add cost.
- Buy the density you'll need, once. A 2U server has 16 or 24 DIMM slots and you will not want to revisit this purchase next year at Q4 prices. Where $/GB is equal, take the bigger module.
- Do not mix ranks and types in a channel. Mixing 1R and 2R modules, or RDIMM with LRDIMM, is the most common reason a memory upgrade fails to post. Match what is already installed — part number where you can.
- Populate channels evenly. Six or eight modules per CPU in the documented order buys real bandwidth; four sticks jammed into the wrong slots costs performance you paid for.
- On the desktop side, right-size. 16 GB is the floor, 32 GB is the sweet spot, 64 GB is for video, virtualization and local AI. At $13–19/GB, buying capacity you might use in 2028 is expensive insurance — and DDR5 prices may well be lower by then.
