Intel Xeon Gold is the volume tier of the Xeon Scalable family — the 5100/6100 series (Skylake-SP, 1st gen) and 5200/6200 series (Cascade Lake-SP, 2nd gen) that drive most Dell 14th-generation PowerEdge and HPE Gen10 servers in service today. Gold parts offer higher core counts and clocks, faster memory (2666–2933 MT/s vs 2400), more UPI links between sockets, and the 6100/6200 series supports four-socket systems. Silver is the value tier for lighter dual-socket workloads — see our Xeon Silver processors if that fits better.
In almost every mainstream platform, yes — Dell 14th-gen PowerEdge and HPE Gen10 use the same LGA 3647 socket for both generations and accept 5200/6200-series CPUs after a BIOS/firmware update. Update firmware first, then swap; memory ceiling rises to 2933 MT/s with a 2nd-gen part installed.
