SAS is the drive interface servers are built around: dual-ported, full-duplex, and engineered for 24/7 duty in RAID arrays and storage shelves. A SAS hard drive spins at 7.2K, 10K or 15K RPM behind a 6Gb/s or 12Gb/s link, and SAS SSDs push the same interface to flash speeds. Every SAS drive we list is securely wiped to industry standards, SMART-tested, and listed with its hours of operation. Remember the plumbing: SAS drives need a SAS controller or backplane — a SAS HBA runs SATA drives happily, but a SAS drive will not work on a plain SATA port. SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) is the enterprise interface: dual ports for redundant paths, full-duplex transfers, deeper command queuing, and 12Gb/s links against SATA’s 6Gb/s. SATA wins on price per terabyte; SAS wins on sustained performance and reliability under RAID workloads. A SAS controller runs both — a SATA port runs only SATA.
Not on the motherboard’s SATA ports — the connectors look similar, but a SAS hard disk requires a SAS HBA or RAID controller. In servers and workstations with a SAS backplane they are plug-and-play; in a desktop, add an inexpensive HBA card first.

In a hot-swap bay, yes — each server family takes its own caddy, and a 2.5″ drive in a 3.5″ bay needs an adapter bracket. Tell us your server model and we will bundle the correct tray with the drive, tested together.
