The R760 is Dell's general-purpose 2U rack server built on 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids): two sockets, up to 56 cores each, 32 DDR5 registered slots, PCIe Gen5 risers and a Smart Flow chassis designed to keep the highest-TDP parts air-cooled in a normal data-centre aisle. Dell positions it for mixed-workload standardization, databases and analytics, and VDI. Direct liquid cooling is optional, but it is a rack-level solution — it needs manifolds and a coolant distribution unit, not just a cold plate in the server.

This is the SKU table printed in Dell's R760 Technical Guide. The 8470Q is a liquid-cooling-only part. Dell also ships the R760 with Silver and lower-bin Gold parts that are not in this table — the servers we sell most often use Xeon Gold 5416S and Silver 4416+.   • Low-line derating matters. A 2400 W supply run on 100–120 VAC is derated to 1400 W. A 1400 W or 1100 W supply on 100–120 VAC is derated to 1050 W. Size your redundancy on the derated figure, not the label.
  • The 700 W, 1800 W and 2800 W options are 200–240 V only — they will not run on a US 120 V circuit at all.
  • Form factor differs: 700 W through 1800 W are the 60 mm redundant PSU; 2400 W and 2800 W are the wider 86 mm unit.
  • Cord adapters exist: a C19 cord plus a C20-to-C21 jumper serves the 2800 W supply, and a C13 cord plus a C14-to-C15 jumper serves the 1800 W.

Dell qualifies 24 Gb SAS4 and 12 Gb SAS SSDs, 6 Gb SATA SSDs, Gen4 NVMe up to 15.63 TB, 10K SAS HDDs to 2.4 TB, and 7.2K SAS or SATA nearline HDDs to 20 TB. Note that the front bay count is a factory backplane configuration: moving between 8, 16 and 24 bays means a different backplane and cabling, not just buying more drives.

Which of these slots physically exist depends on the riser configuration you order — the R760 has several, and they are interchangeable but not all combinations are valid.

The questions we are actually asked about this server

Is there a Dell PowerEdge R760XL?
No. Dell's 16th-generation 2U line is the R760 plus three variants — R760xs, R760xa (the GPU chassis; the units we build on it carry up to four NVIDIA L40S) and R760xd2 (the dense-storage chassis, 24 × 3.5" LFF). There is no "R760XL" in Dell's catalogue, and the name does not appear anywhere in Dell's own R760 Technical Guide. If you arrived here looking for an R760XL manual or its PSU list, the document you want is the R760 Technical Guide and the answer to the PSU question is in the power supply table above. Chassis you may be thinking of instead: the 1U R660, the 4-socket R860/R960, or the storage-dense R760xd2.
Which power supplies does the R760 take, and can I mix them?
Eight options, 700 W to 2800 W — the full table with efficiency class, input range, heat output and cord type is in the section above. Two things catch people out. First, derating on low line: a 2400 W supply on a US 120 V circuit delivers only 1400 W, and 1400 W/1100 W units deliver 1050 W. Second, the 700 W, 1800 W and 2800 W options are 200–240 V only. Dell's redundant configuration expects a matched pair, and the 60 mm (700–1800 W) and 86 mm (2400/2800 W) bodies are physically different — do not plan on mixing wattages. How do I reach iDRAC, and which licence tier do I need?
iDRAC9 is embedded in every R760 — no agent or software to install. It comes up on the dedicated iDRAC Ethernet port as soon as the server has power and a network cable, before any operating system exists, and it is manageable from that moment. For a laptop at the rack there is an iDRAC Direct micro-AB USB port on the front panel; a Quick Sync 2 wireless module is optional for phone access. Automation goes through the iDRAC RESTful API with Redfish. Four licence tiers ship: Basic (100–500 series only), Express (the default on 600-series and up), Enterprise (adds virtual console, AD/LDAP and remote presence) and Datacenter (adds telemetry streaming, thermal management and automated certificates). Virtual console — the feature most people actually want — needs Enterprise or higher, and System Lockdown needs Enterprise or Datacenter too. The boot-time key sequence for System Setup and the Lifecycle Controller is printed on screen at POST and documented in Dell's Installation and Service Manual on dell.com; the system board layout and jumper settings are on the System Information Label inside the chassis cover.
What rails does the R760 use, and will it fit my rack?
Three options. B21 ReadyRails sliding rails: drop-in, tool-less in square or unthreaded round-hole 4-post racks, tooled in threaded-hole racks, full extension for service, optional cable management arm or strain relief bar. B22 Stab-in/Drop-in sliding rails: same plus tool-less support for threaded round-hole racks and Dell Titan/Titan-D racks. B20 static rails: wider rack compatibility and a smaller footprint, but no in-rack serviceability and no CMA or SRB support. The chassis itself is 482 mm wide and 772.13 mm deep with the bezel fitted — check that against your rack depth including the CMA if you order one. Dell's rail sizing and rack compatibility matrix on dell.com is the authority for edge cases; if CMA support is not needed, the outer CMA brackets can be removed from the sliding rails to shorten them and clear rear-mounted PDUs.
How much memory can the R760 hold, and what type?
32 DDR5 RDIMM slots, registered ECC only — no UDIMMs. Dell qualifies 16 GB (1R), 32 and 64 GB (2R), 128 GB (4R) and 256 GB (8R) modules, all rated DDR5-4800 at 1.1 V. Speed depends on population: 4800 MT/s with one DIMM per channel, 4400 MT/s with two, and the processor can lower the rated speed further. Dell's specification sheet quotes a maximum of 8 TB with 256 GB modules; the Sapphire Rapids SKUs listed in the Technical Guide are individually rated for 6 TB per processor, so check the ceiling against your exact CPU before planning a maximum-memory build.
Can the R760 take GPUs, and how many?
Yes — up to two 350 W double-wide cards, or six 75 W single-wide cards. The Smart Flow chassis exists precisely so that high-TDP parts stay air-cooled, but GPU support depends on which riser configuration the chassis was built with, and Dell's thermal restriction matrix rules out GPUs in some drive and fan combinations. What is BOSS-N1 and do I need it?
BOSS-N1 is Dell's Boot Optimized Storage Subsystem: a small carrier holding two M.2 NVMe SSDs in hardware RAID 1, dedicated to the operating system or hypervisor. It matters because it keeps the OS off the front bays — all 12, 16 or 24 of them stay available for data, and a hypervisor boot mirror does not consume a PERC RAID group. On any R760 you plan to run ESXi or Hyper-V on, it is worth having. There is a Dell video showing the module swap.
Which operating systems are supported?
Dell qualifies VMware ESXi, Microsoft Windows Server with Hyper-V, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Canonical Ubuntu Server LTS. Version-level interoperability is published on Dell's OS support matrix. We ship servers bare unless you ask otherwise — tell us your hypervisor when you request a quote and we will validate the controller and NIC firmware against it before it leaves.
R760 or R760xs — which do I want?
Both are 2U dual-socket 16th-generation servers, but they are different chassis with separate Dell service documentation and separate service videos — parts and procedures do not carry across. Everything on this page describes the base R760: up to 56 cores per socket, 32 DDR5 slots, up to eight PCIe slots, up to 24 × 2.5" bays, PSUs to 2800 W and up to two 350 W GPUs. For the R760xs we can quote the same generation in the smaller-option chassis. Rather than guess which fits, tell us the workload — core count, memory ceiling, drive count and whether GPUs are in play — and we will spec the right one.
