The Z440 is the mid-range member of HP's 2014 Z-series: one LGA2011-3 socket on an Intel C612 chipset, eight DDR4 registered slots, six expansion slots and a tool-less minitower chassis that is 4U-convertible for rack use. It is a single-processor machine — although the Xeon E5-2600 family it accepts is a dual-socket part family, HP's documentation states plainly that the Z440 does not support dual-processor configurations.

The two Gen3 x16 slots (2 and 5) are the graphics slots. The 700 W supply ships with two graphics power cables and supports up to 225 W of graphics; the 525 W supply has no 6-pin graphics cable at all.

Ports

  • Front: 4 × USB 3.0 (the topmost is a charging port), 1 headset, 1 microphone.
  • Rear: 4 × USB 3.0, 2 × USB 2.0, 2 × PS/2, 1 × RJ-45 GbE, audio line-in, audio line-out, rear power button. Serial is available with an optional bracket connector cabled to the board header.
  • Internal: one 2×5 header carrying 2 × USB 2.0 (also feeds an optional 15-in-1 media card reader) and one 2×10 header carrying 1 × USB 3.0.

Platform-wide, the Z440 supports the Intel Xeon E5-1600 v3/v4 and E5-2600 v3/v4 product families on its single LGA2011-3 socket. The table below is the narrower list HP actually sold the machine with — it is the right list to check against if you are matching a CPU to a BIOS revision. Memory runs at the speed of the slowest installed processor or DIMM, so the CPU also caps your RAM speed.

Higher-core E5-2600 v3/v4 parts (for example the 8-core E5-2667 v4 and the 10-core E5-2687W v3) are outside HP's factory list but are within the family the platform supports — several of the machines we ship use them. Memory: what fits and how to load it

Not supported: unbuffered DIMMs, non-ECC DIMMs, load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules, and any DDR, DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

  • Broadwell (v4) CPUs take PC4-2400R modules; Haswell (v3) CPUs take PC4-2133R. The system runs at the speed of the slowest installed processor or DIMM.
  • Load largest modules first, smallest last. Each channel has a black and a white socket — fill the black sockets first, then the white ones, starting with the socket furthest from the CPU and alternating sides.
  • HP's documented population order across the eight sockets is DIMM1, 5, 3, 7, 8, 4, 6, 2.
  • Balanced four- and eight-module configurations are the ones HP rates "Best": 4 × 4 GB (16 GB), 4 × 8 GB (32 GB), 8 × 8 GB (64 GB), 4 × 16 GB (64 GB), 8 × 16 GB (128 GB).
  • ECC corrects single-bit errors automatically. A multi-bit error, or a command/address parity error, reboots the system and halts it with an F1 prompt.

The questions we are actually asked about this machine

Which key opens the BIOS on an HP Z440?
Press F10 at the HP logo screen to enter the F10 Setup utility — that is the Z440's BIOS setup. Two neighbours are worth knowing: F9 brings up the one-time boot device menu, and F2 starts the built-in diagnostics (HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI). The BIOS menus are available in twelve languages with matching keyboard mappings. Full menu-by-menu detail is in the Z440 User Guide.
What do the beep codes and blinking power LED mean?
On the Z440, errors detected before video comes up are reported as a pattern of beeps plus blinks of the power LED — count both, because it is the combination that identifies the failing component. In practice the overwhelming majority of Z440 no-post cases we see are memory: reseat every DIMM, then try one known-good module in DIMM1 alone. Second most common is a graphics card that is not fully seated or not getting its 6-pin power. Note that HP publishes the numbered blink/beep table in the Z440 Maintenance and Service Guide, which is a separate document from the ones on this page — we do not currently host it, and we would rather say so than print a table we cannot source. If you are stuck, send us the pattern and we will read it for you.
The Z440 has no video output on the motherboard — is that normal?
Yes. HP's QuickSpecs list Integrated Graphics: No. The Xeon E5-1600/E5-2600 processors this machine takes have no integrated GPU and the board has no display connector, so a Z440 always needs a discrete graphics card to produce a picture. If a Z440 boots with fans spinning but nothing on screen, check the card first: is it seated in slot 2 or slot 5, and does it have its auxiliary power connected? Remember the 525 W supply ships without a 6-pin graphics cable.
Where do I find the motherboard diagram and connector layout?
HP prints a component diagram on a label on the inside of the side access panel of every Z440 — that is the fastest reference and it matches the exact board revision in your machine. The printed version, with the slot table, DIMM socket numbering and every header, is in the Z440 QuickSpecs (System Board section); the I/O slot layout diagram is in the Technical White Paper. Board form factor is 24 × 31 cm (9.6 × 12.2 in) — it is not a standard ATX plate, so the Z440 board does not transplant into a generic case.
What RAID does the Z440 support, and where is the driver?
RAID is provided by the chipset through Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise (RSTe), not by an add-in card. The two SATA ports support RAID 0 and 1; the four sSATA ports support RAID 0, 1 and 10. RAID 5 works but was never a factory-configurable option. Enter the option ROM with Ctrl-I when the Intel RSTe banner appears at POST, or build arrays from inside Windows with the RSTe GUI or the RSTCLI command line, both of which come in Intel's RSTe driver package. One caveat from HP's own guide: the hardware RAID is Windows-only — on Linux, use the distribution's software RAID instead. Hardware RAID beyond this needs an add-in controller in a PCIe slot.
How much RAM can a Z440 take, and what type?
128 GB maximum — eight slots, 16 GB per module, DDR4 ECC Registered only. Unbuffered, non-ECC and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules will not work, and neither will DDR3 from an older Z420. Speed depends on the CPU: 2400 MT/s with a v4 (Broadwell) processor, 2133 MT/s with a v3 (Haswell), and the system always drops to the slowest part installed. Which power supply do I need — 525 W or 700 W?
Two supplies were offered: 525 W, 85% efficient, with no 6-pin graphics power cable, and 700 W, 90% efficient, with two graphics power cables, supporting up to 225 W of graphics. Both are wide-ranging with active power factor correction (90–269 VAC). The practical rule: if the card you want draws auxiliary power — anything from a Quadro K5000 upward, or any GeForce GTX/RTX — you want the 700 W unit. Entry cards that run off the slot alone are fine on the 525 W. Both are proprietary HP form factors; a standard ATX supply does not drop in.
Can the Z440 be rack-mounted?
Yes — HP rates the chassis at 4U in a rack. The tower itself measures 17.0" × 6.65" × 17.5" (431.8 × 168.9 × 444.7 mm) to the back of the service panel, or 17.9" (455.7 mm) measured to the rear padlock loop, which is the number to use when you are checking depth clearance. Weight runs from 24.3 lb bare to 38.5 lb fully loaded.
How many drives fit, and can I add more?
The chassis has two internal 3.5" bays (with acoustic damping rails pre-installed), two external 5.25" bays and a dedicated 9.5 mm slim optical bay. A third or fourth 3.5" drive each occupy one 5.25" bay; a third and fourth 2.5" drive share a single 5.25" bay in a 2-in-1 carrier. There are six 6 Gb/s SATA channels on the board, all of which can be configured for eSATA with the optional cable kit (no hot-swap). We build our units using the two internal bays; the extra bay conversions are user-installable.
Is a refurbished Z440 worth buying in 2026?
It is a sensible buy when you need many cores, a lot of ECC memory and a real GPU slot on a small budget — CAD, photo and video editing, DAW work, virtualization labs. It is the wrong buy if you need current single-thread speed, NVMe boot from a native M.2 socket, or DDR5.
