Within a capacity, price moves with speed (MT/s), rank, and DIMM type: a 2133 MT/s RDIMM sits at the bottom of the range and a 3200 MT/s module at the top. LRDIMMs and high-density 64GB parts carry a premium because they exist to fill fully populated dual-socket boards.

Servers scale differently: a virtualization host is usually sized at 8–16GB per active VM, so 128GB to 512GB is the common band for a dual-socket box. Yes — the module simply runs at the fastest speed your CPU generation allows. A 3200 MT/s RDIMM on a 2933 MT/s platform works fine at 2933; it will never run faster than the platform ceiling. What matters more is uniformity: keep capacity, rank, and vendor consistent across channels, because mismatched ranks can refuse to boot.
RDIMMs are the right answer for most server configurations. LRDIMMs earn their premium only when you are chasing maximum capacity — high-density modules on fully populated dual-socket boards.
