Server Backplanes — Dell & HPE Drive Backplanes

The backplane is the board every hot-swap bay plugs into — it carries power and data between your drives, the RAID controller, and the chassis. When bays go dead or you are converting a chassis to more (or different) bays, a matched backplane is the fix. We stock tested backplanes for Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant chassis, matched by model, form factor, and bay count.

Matching a Backplane

  • Chassis and bay layout: an 8×2.5″ backplane differs from the 16- or 24-bay board even within one server model — match the OEM part number or tell us your service tag and bay count.
  • Interface: SAS/SATA backplanes and NVMe-capable backplanes are different boards with different cabling; check what your controller supports.
  • Expander or not: some backplanes include a built-in SAS expander; direct-attach boards need one cable per drive group instead.
  • Cables and trays: a conversion usually needs matching cables and drive trays — we can bundle the full set.
