Used & Refurbished Cisco UCS Servers

Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System) servers are Intel Xeon rack and blade servers built for virtualization, databases and private cloud. C-Series rack servers (C220, C240, C460) run standalone and are managed through the built-in Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC); B-Series blades (B200) install in a UCS 5108 chassis and run behind Cisco Fabric Interconnects.

PCSP builds refurbished Cisco UCS servers to order across three generations — M4, M5 and M6. Pick a model below, then choose the processors, memory, drives, RAID controller, network cards, power supplies and warranty; we assemble the server to that spec and test it before it ships. Every build includes a 1-year PCSP warranty, extendable up to 5 years. For other brands, see all refurbished servers or the rack server collection.

M4, M5 or M6: which Cisco UCS generation?

M6 (2021) — 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable with up to 40 cores per socket, 32 DDR4-3200 slots and PCIe 4.0. The newest platform here and the longest runway: Cisco’s last date of support for the C220 M6 and C240 M6 is September 30, 2030.

M5 (2017) — 1st and 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable with up to 28 cores per socket, DDR4 up to 2933 and PCIe 3.0. The middle ground on price and performance; Cisco’s last date of support for the M5 generation is October 31, 2028.

M4 (2014) — Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 with DDR4-2400 on the two-socket C220, C240 and B200; Xeon E7 on the four-socket-capable C460. The lowest entry cost; Cisco’s support for M4 ended on February 29, 2024, so it fits labs, test and development, and secondary workloads best.

C220, C240, C460 or B200?

C220 is the 1U compute node: two sockets and up to 10 front 2.5″ drives (M5, M6) in one rack unit. C240 is the 2U storage and expansion platform: up to 26 (M5) or 28 (M6) 2.5″ drives, a 12-bay 3.5″ option, and up to 6 (M4, M5) or 8 (M6) PCIe slots — on the 28-bay C240 M6 the four rear drive bays take the place of two PCIe risers. C460 M4 is a 4U server for two or four processors with 96 DIMM slots, built for large in-memory databases. B200 is a half-width blade: it needs a UCS 5108 chassis and Fabric Interconnects, so it suits extending an existing UCS domain. More blade platforms are in Blade Servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cisco UCS?

Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System) is Cisco’s line of Intel Xeon servers for the data center. It has two families: C-Series rack servers such as the C220 and C240, which run standalone, and B-Series blade servers such as the B200, which install in a UCS 5108 chassis connected to Fabric Interconnects. The M4, M5 and M6 suffixes mark the hardware generation.

Do Cisco UCS C-Series servers need a Fabric Interconnect?

No. Cisco documents every C220 and C240 from M4 to M6 as usable standalone, managed through the built-in Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) like any other rack server, with no Fabric Interconnect or UCS Manager required. B-Series blades are different: a B200 needs a UCS 5108 chassis and Fabric Interconnects to run.

What is the difference between Cisco UCS M4, M5 and M6?

The processor generation and everything that follows from it. The two-socket M4 models use Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 with DDR4-2400 and PCIe 3.0. M5 moves to 1st and 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable (up to 28 cores per socket) with DDR4 up to 2933. M6 uses 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable (up to 40 cores per socket), 32 DDR4-3200 slots and PCIe 4.0.

Cisco UCS C220 or C240 — which should I choose?

Same processors and memory within a generation; the chassis decides. The 1U C220 maximizes compute per rack unit with up to 10 front drives. The 2U C240 holds far more storage (up to 26 drives on the C240 M5, 28 on the C240 M6, or 12 large 3.5″ drives) and more PCIe slots for network cards and accelerators. Pick the C240 for storage or expansion, the C220 for dense compute.

Does Cisco still support UCS M4, M5 and M6 servers?

M4: Cisco support ended on February 29, 2024. M5: end of sale was October 30, 2023, and the last date of support is October 31, 2028, but only on an existing service contract; Cisco stopped attaching new contracts on October 29, 2024. M6: end of sale was September 29, 2025, and the last date of support is September 30, 2030. The warranty on a PCSP server is our own and does not depend on a Cisco service contract.

Does the B200 M5 fit the same chassis as the B200 M4?

Yes. Both are half-width blades for the Cisco UCS 5108 chassis (up to eight blades in 6RU) or UCS Mini. For the B200 M5, Cisco lists the 6200, 6300 and 6400 series and the 6536 Fabric Interconnects; the 2104XP I/O module supported with the B200 M4 is not on the B200 M5 list.

What warranty comes with a refurbished Cisco UCS server?

Every Cisco UCS build includes a 1-year PCSP warranty at no charge. In the configuration you can extend it to 2, 3, 4 or 5 years, or choose on-site coverage with 8×5 next-business-day or 24×7×4 response.
