Dell PowerEdge R740 vs R740xd
The R740 and the R740xd are the same 14th-generation 2U server: same two Xeon Scalable sockets, the same 24 DIMM slots and 3 TB memory ceiling, the same iDRAC9 management. The difference is entirely storage. The standard R740 uses front drive bays only. The R740xd adds a mid-chassis drive cage and a rear drive cage, plus backplanes that carry NVMe, which is why it became the default vSAN, Ceph and software-defined-storage node of its generation.
