A rack server is a computer built to mount in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Height is measured in rack units (U): a 1U server is 1.75 inches tall, a 2U server is 3.5 inches. Rackmount design lets you stack dozens of servers in a single cabinet with shared power and cooling.

Should I buy a 1U or 2U rack server?

Choose 1U for dense compute — virtualization hosts, web farms, and colocation where rack space is billed per U. Choose 2U when you need more local storage bays, GPU support, or additional PCIe expansion. 2U servers also run quieter because they use larger fans.
