The Z440 is the single-socket member of HP’s Z440/Z640/Z840 family and, twelve years after HP first published its QuickSpecs, still one of the most sensible cheap workstations you can buy. One Xeon E5, eight registered ECC slots, two full x16 slots and a tool-less chassis that a first-timer can strip in a minute. It is not fast by 2026 standards, but it is quiet, reliable and absurdly cheap per core — which is why they keep selling. The two things people get wrong about the Z440
- The 128 GB memory ceiling is real, and the memory must be ECC registered. Eight slots sounds generous until you find the platform caps there. If your workload needs 256 GB or more, the Z440 is the wrong machine — look at a Z640 or a G4-generation tower instead. Desktop non-ECC sticks will not work at all.
- The 525 W supply has no auxiliary graphics connector. That is the number one cause of disappointed Z440 buyers: the card arrives, and there is nothing to plug into it. The 700 W unit ships with two graphics cables and is specified for up to 225 W of graphics. If a discrete GPU is part of your plan, buy the 700 W chassis.
What is on the shelf right now
Our Z440 stock leans towards Xeon E5-2667 v4 eight-core builds and E5-1650 v4 six-core machines, with some E5-1620 v3, E5-1650 v3 and E5-2687W v3 units mixed in. Memory is usually 32 GB or 64 GB of registered ECC DDR4. Graphics vary widely because this chassis gets used for very different jobs: entry Quadro K620 and M2000 cards on office and CAD builds, and GeForce GTX 1060 / 1080 Ti cards on the music-production and gaming-oriented listings. Prefer to specify it yourself? Choose a build-to-order Z440 and pick the CPU, memory, storage and card.
Is it still worth buying?
For a second CAD seat, a lab bench machine, a home studio DAW, a Plex or virtualisation host, or a first workstation on a tight budget — yes. You get ECC memory, a proper 6 Gb/s SATA subsystem, an 85–90% efficient supply and a chassis engineered for years of duty, at a price no new desktop can approach. Where it loses is memory ceiling, PCIe generation and single-thread speed. Step up to the Z4 G4 for Xeon W and 512 GB support, the Z640 for a second socket in the same generation, or the Z840 if you need maximum expansion. What are the full HP Z440 specs?
One Xeon E5-1600 or E5-2600 v3/v4 processor, eight DDR4 registered ECC slots capped at 128 GB, two PCIe Gen3 x16 slots plus x8, x4, x1 and one legacy PCI, six SATA 6 Gb/s channels, two internal 3.5″ bays and two external 5.25″ bays, and either a 525 W or 700 W power supply. How much RAM can an HP Z440 take?
128 GB, using eight registered ECC DDR4 modules. Only ECC DIMMs are supported — unbuffered desktop memory will not run in this board. Populate slots in HP’s documented load order, which the QuickSpecs sets out, or the machine may not train all channels.
Can I fit a modern graphics card?
Mechanically, there are two Gen3 x16 slots with full-length clearance. The practical limits are power and cabling: the 525 W supply provides no six-pin graphics connector, and the 700 W supply is specified for up to 225 W of graphics with two cables. Tell us which card you intend to run and we will build the machine around it.
When did the Z440 come out?
HP published the first revision of the Z440 QuickSpecs in August 2014, and kept updating it through 2016 as Xeon E5 v4 processors and new graphics options were added. That is why two Z440s can differ noticeably in CPU generation and power supply.
What condition are your Z440s in, and what cover comes with them?
They are ex-business machines, cleaned, rebuilt to the ordered specification and tested under load before shipping; cosmetic notes appear on each listing. Configured units carry a free 1-year warranty including parts, labor and shipping, extendable to five years at checkout, and returns are accepted within 90 days of purchase (RMA and restocking terms).
